Applications Due April 17 for Top Trucking Safety Awards

April 17 is the deadline for trucking companies to apply for two prestigious 2009 safety awards presented by the American Trucking Associations' Safety Management Council, which was formed when two of ATA’S councils reorganized recently. The two contests are the Truck Safety Contest, which recognizes first-, second-, and third-place winners by mileage class and motor carrier type based on vehicle accident incidence, and the Industrial Safety Contest, which is similar but based on work injury incidence.

Both awards will be presented at the council's Safety & Human Resources National Conference in September.

The Safety Management Council (SMC) was created when ATA's Safety & Loss Prevention Management Council and its Security Council reorganized to form the Supply Chain Security & Loss Prevention Council (SCS&LPC) and SMC. This change was made after both councils' management advisory boards and membership approved it at February 2009 meetings.

Sean Garney, manager of ATA Safety Programs, 703-838-1931, is an ATA contact for the 2009 contests. In addition to the two contests with application deadlines this month, SMC will present two other awards at the September conference. They are the 2009 National Safety Director Award (deadline: July 1), given to the motor carrier safety executive "whose professional qualifications, safety programs and achievements are deemed most outstanding among his or her peers," and the 2009 Human Resources Professional of the Year award, for an individual who has excelled at managing a motor carrier's recruiting, training, benefits, and other HR functions with innovative programs.
