Wood-Fired Boiler Emissions Could Cost Company $96,041

  • Oct 01, 2008

EPA Region 5 has filed an administrative complaint against Wisconsin Veneer & Plywood Inc. for alleged Clean Air Act violations at the company's wood veneer, plywood, and lumber manufacturing plant in Mattoon, Wis. Proposing a $96,041 penalty, the agency alleges WV&P failed to comply with certain requirements of its state operating permit for its wood-fired boiler that emits air pollutants, including particulate matter (smoke, dust, ash) into the atmosphere.

The company has 30 days from receipt of the complaint to file an answer and request a hearing. It may request an informal conference with EPA at any time to discuss resolving the allegations, the agency notes.

Information about EPA Region 5's air enforcement program is at www.epa.gov/region5/air/enforce/index.html. Potential environmental violations may be reported at www.epa.gov/compliance/complaints/.
